JUST RELEASED!
Gordon Lightfoot's Carefree Highway

In today’s brand new lesson, I’ll teach you how to play Gordon Lightfoot’s Carefree Highway (1975). I’m using an arrangement with capo on the 2nd fret, which has us using chord shapes in the Key of D. I’ll begin by teaching the easiest possible way to play things, cutting a few of the tricky corners that may prove too difficult for beginners.

If you’re looking for the full version Lightfoot plays, stick around for the end of the lesson where I’ll demonstrate. This one goes out to Song Notes supporter Richie - who emailed asking for any tips on simplifying some of the trickier chords. Richie, and everyone else watching – I hope this helps!

FROM LAST WEEK
Lead Guitar and the Formula 1 Theme Song

I want to look at the Formula 1 (F1) theme song, which is played during the opening credits of each race. To me, this short instrumental is a weekend anthem that pumps me up each and every time I hear it - because I love watching F1 so much.

So, let's learn it on guitar! I'll show how to play the main melodic theme, which is really just two short phrases and a simple key change. Fairly easy to learn the notes, but plenty of free practice sessions (using my audio jam tracks) will have you cranking out purple sectors in no time. Lights out and away we go!

Hey there, Reader! New lesson today teaching Wichita Lineman, the all-time classic from 1968, written by Jimmy Webb & recorded by Glen Campbell. I've gotten so many requests for this one over the years – and I'm quite happy to finally have learned it and made a lesson. This song is originally recorded in the Key of F, using some rather unconventional chord shapes — but I teach a capo 5th fret version that uses the Key of C chord family. This makes things quite a bit easier to play, while...

Hard to believe summer is almost here... my kids have less than 4 weeks left of school and soccer, and then it's away we go into summertime. But first, I have some fun guitar stuff to share.... First, let me introduce you to Key Master – a new interactive web tool over on my Song Notes website. This free tool lets you see and hear the notes, chords, and progressions found in the most common major keys — all in...

Hey there, friends! In today’s video I’d like to share a collection of 13 songs I’ve taught previously – all of which utilize droning strings as part of the main riff. This is not something you’ll find in all songs — but when used well, it can really elevate a riff to a whole new level. Here's a link to the new video: What is a "Droning" String? The term droning strings simply refers to one string, usually open (un-fretted), which is played constantly. While this is happening, a melodic riff...
